Join Susan Bradshaw on Tuesday evenings to master the elegant and beautiful lettering of Copperplate Calligraphy over the course of 4 weeks. Copperplate is also known as the engraver’s script. The term derives from the thin plate of copper on which letters were engraved for reproduction. This technique became widespread in the 17th century. After that, it was pen-written letters which mimicked the technically perfect engraved ones with their fine hairlines and elaborate flourishes. Copperplate script (then called Roundhand) was the result. A fine pointed nib replaced the quill in the 19th century.

Admired for its beauty, grace and fluidity, this style is a popular writing style for social correspondence. Come along and enjoy learning the richness of this interesting calligraphy script.

Course Overview:

Over four weeks, Susan will provide exemplars and exercises to guide you through learning to use a nib. The course will begin with mastering lower-case letters, working through the alphabet before exploring the ornate capital letters, then putting your skills together to create a finished piece of a handwritten quote. Susan will provide example quotes for use, but students are encourage to bring their own phrase if desired. Those who attend this four-part workshop will gain insight from our experienced tutor who is well travelled and a fountain of knowledge when it comes to the history of calligraphy.

Workshops are hosted at MyArt studio, conveniently located in downtown Toowoomba, at 16 Duggan Street near Grand Central.  MyArt Studio is a creative initiative of Murray’s Art & Framing, positioned at the rear of our shop front.  Our light filled studio space is a comfortable learning environment equipped with bathrooms, a kitchenette and separate studio sink for cleaning up.
