Bill Bolton's Vision - 60 Years On
Commemorating the Lionel Lindsay Gallery and Library Collection, established in 1959 and housed at Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery.

Exhibition curated by Jayson Althofer, Bolton Library Services Officer.
Exhibition on display Saturday 6 April - Sunday 21 July 2019.

The 60th anniversary exhibition of the Lionel Lindsay Gallery and Library Collection, 1959-2019. The Lindsay Collection housed at Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery was founded by W.R.F. Bolton MBE, a visionary Toowoomba businessman and collector. He named it to honour the artist and writer Sir Lionel Lindsay. For Bolton, the collection would represent Australia from the first European use of that name in the 1600s to the Second World War. The exhibition showcases many treasures from the collection, such as rare books and maps, oil paintings by Arthur Streeton and Frederick McCubbin, watercolours by Norman Lindsay and prints by Lionel Lindsay.

Browsing welcome and reading by appointment
At the opening of the Lionel Lindsay Art Gallery and Library in 1959, Sir Lionel Lindsay paid tribute to Bill Bolton and the notions on which he established and built a collection of books, manuscripts and artworks. He saw Bolton as a man who loved Australian traditions and who endeavoured to keep those traditions alive and meaningful. Bolton took his inspiration from explorers, pioneers, writers, artists and other people he believed contributed to a sense of nationhood and community. The value of the Lindsay Collection is incalculable as it comprises part of our national heritage. A number of its items would be considered as rare gems in any of Australia’s major research libraries.
