Bungaree was the first person known to have been called an ‘Australian’. He navigated calamitous times and became a central figure in early colonial Sydney: a highly respected Aboriginal leader and intermediary between Aboriginal and colonial cultures. In 1815, Governor Macquarie granted land to Bungaree and his extended family for a farm at a site near present-day Mosman, New South Wales.
Bungaree’s Farm is an exhibition of contemporary Aboriginal audio, video, performance and installation art. It explores Bungaree’s rich story and legacy through these themes: Travelling Bungaree, Being Bungaree, Walking Bungaree, Singing Bungaree and Team Bungaree.
The exhibition was commissioned by Mosman Art Gallery in 2015 for the 200th anniversary of the establishment of Bungaree’s Farm. It resulted from a series of intensive residency workshops led by renowned Aboriginal curator Djon Mundine OAM, assisted by Aboriginal dramaturg Andrea James. The artists developed their works on the site of Bungaree’s Farm.
Join us for a Curators Talk event on Friday 15 March at 5.30pm.
Exhibition on display until 28 March 2024
Bungaree’s Farm was commissioned by Mosman Art Gallery.
