To celebrate Toowoomba Carnival of Flower’s 75th anniversary, this exhibition brings together artworks by local artists that respond to the theme ‘Carnival Queens’. It blends contemporary art with Carnival’s rich history.
Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery has a special connection with first Carnival of Flowers Queen, Miss Fay Ryan, who was crowned in 1950. During her coronation, Queen Fay sat upon Gilded armchair in the manner of the Italian Renaissance c. 1850. Her ‘throne’ had been newly gifted to the City of Toowoomba by Fred Gould in honour of his late wife Lucy. The antique armchair now resides in The Fred and Lucy Gould Art Collection at Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery.
