The traditional Japanese art of flower arrangement, Ikebana, is a disciplined art form that makes use of minimalism to emphasise shape, line and form. Unlike western floral arrangements, Ikebana often places emphasis on other aspects of a plant than its bloom. Traditional Ikebana artists compile their arrangements in silence, showing an appreciation for the materials used and as a spiritual connection to nature.
Progressing from exclusively naturalistic arrangements, Ikebana has become boldly experimental in modern times. While still retaining the intrinsic artistry of its ancient heritage, modern Ikebana incorporates flowing sculptural forms that express great power.
Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery is proud to once again showcase its annual Carnival of Flowers display by the Toowoomba Ikebana group, Sogetsu School. All members of the group have studied for many years to reach high levels of proficiency, and although not now studying, enjoy the opportunity to practise their art.
