A controversial exploration of female empowerment.
To compliment an investigation of the use of realism in the 1950s as seen in Look Back in Anger, we bring you the 1982 play Top Girls by Caryl Churchill.
Marlene is a successful entrepreneur, shattering the glass and is on the way to ‘having it all’. In the famous first scene, Marlene celebrates a promotion by hosting a surreal dinner party featuring notable proto-feminists from different moments in history.
This play is another trademark of the British theatre. Asking the question ‘What does it mean to be a successful woman?’, it made original audiences gasp through its use of overlapping dialogue, non-linear structure, and its controversial exploration of female empowerment. Part realism and part dream, the play gives us insight into the angry young women who live with us and through us today by looking at the conflict that comes with sacrifice for success and the ultimately flawed desire to ‘have it all’.
The 2016 Naturalism Now series includes Look Back in Anger and Top Girls.
