This exhibition, occurring in the year of the centenary of Armistice, explores the place of landscape in the Australian cultural imagination. The exhibiting artists, most of whom have close links with the University of Southern Queensland and the Darling Downs, have created works that respond to Frank Hurley’s iconic photographs of the Western Front and the Middle East in 1917 and 1918. To make sense of a conflict that left Australia a broken nation required an imagining of the war that drew on familiar tropes, the most pervasive of which was the belief that the Australian people share a special relationship with the land. Battlefields became physical and imaginary spaces which were, like Australia, new lands to be claimed, becoming in the process overseas Australian Outbacks. Hurley’s images are an appropriate starting point for a reimagining of the conflict and an exploration of this special relationship.
