Focus on RSL Hall and Honour Roll

Toowoomba’s Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Hall was opened in September 1924 with an honour roll incorporated in the foyer. The story of the founding of the hall and honour roll will be the subject of the next talk at the Toowoomba Historical Society. The speaker is new society member Jeff Hewitt. Jeff left New Zealand, aged 21, and spent the next seven years travelling the globe before settling in Sydney. He worked for many years in market research and advertising in Sydney and Hong Kong. Jeff and wife Janet moved to Queensland in 1997 and retired to Highfields three years ago. He has published Two Blues (a history of Mosman Rugby Club). In 2017-2018 he co-authored the Goombungee Remembers project as part of the Anzac centenary program. Last year, after researching all 1348 names of soldiers and nurses on the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall WWI Roll of Honour, Jeff put the results on an online searchable database for Toowoomba RSL. All are welcome to attend the meeting at the Society’s Rooms, 49 Lindsay St, Toowoomba on Monday, 19 August 2019 at 1.30pm. Light refreshments will be served.
