Ikebana, the disciplined, traditional art of Japanese flower arrangement embodies a sensitivity to nature. Practising artists often create in silence to establish a spiritual connection to nature and an appreciation for the materials used. The sculptural arrangements are the result of careful consideration and contemplation and artisans make potent use of minimalism to emphasise shape, line and form.

Contemporary artisans have continued to work within the guides of traditional Ikebana while also developing the compositional aesthetics of the artform. Modern arrangements combine new methods and materials and push the boundaries in bold and experimental ways.

Toowoomba Regional Art gallery is proud to showcase its annual display of Ikebana by Toowoomba’s Ikebana group, Sogetsu School, during the Carnival of Flowers celebrations.
