How much art can one person fit into a lifetime?

From his first exhibition in 1966 to today, Stephen Spurrier approaches his practice and his life with a deep curiosity. His art dances around rhythms, from the subtle influences of the moon on the tides, our bodies and our mental states to natural phenomena of crystalline structures, cloud formations and nebula. Floating in his mindscapes, are strange figures; animals and hand tools cohabitate with shooting stars and morse code, cryptically symbolising his encounters.

With humour, keen observation, intuition and a healthy dose of experimentation, Spurrier’s artworks collapse traditional genres of painting, printmaking, artist’s books, sculpture and social practice into pieces that explore the transient aspects of nature and ultimately the transience of our lives.

Spurrier’s work is represented in State Galleries and in many public collections including Art Gallery of NSW, National Gallery of Victoria, Artbank, the Museum of Modern Art, New York and Tate Modern, London. He has been a finalist in many awards including the Sulman Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW for his multi-panelled painting A History of the Twentieth Century, part one and has been awarded the Swan Hill Print Prize for Entomorphilatic Psychosis and the Acquisition award at the Jacaranda Drawing Awards for his Artist’s book Urban Nomad #32. Since 1998, Spurrier has been Lecturer of Printmaking at University of Southern Queensland and currently calls Toowoomba home.

Journeys of a Curious Mind: The art & lives of Stephen Spurrier is the first survey of Spurrier’s oeuvre and celebrates 50 years of his arts practice.
