USQ Festival of Astronomy

Join USQ at the Festival of Astronomy to celebrate all things Astronomy and Space. The Festival will take place over three days between Thursday 16 August 2018 and Saturday 18 August 2018, running in conjunction with National Science Week.
USQ is proud to host world-leading astronomers, Dr Jessie Christiansen (NASA Exoplanet Science Institute – California Institute of Technology) and Dr Duane Hamacher (Indigenous Studies Centre - Monash University) at Springfield and Toowoomba campuses. Dr Jessie Christiansen will take you on a journey beyond the Solar system in pursuit of exoplanets, while Dr Duane Hamacher will talk about his research into Indigenous Australian astronomical and geological traditions and knowledge.
DAY 1 - THURSDAY 16 AUGUST 2018
Ipswich Youth Astronomy Workshop
Venue: USQ Springfield Campus, Auditorium, Building D, room D101
Audience: Years 7-12
Time: 9.30am - 11.30am
Topic: Dr Jessie Christiansen (NASA Exoplanet Science Institute - Caltech) will be visiting USQ Springfield Campus to present You Can’t Spell Exoplanets without Ex(exutions)!

Toowoomba Youth Astronomy Workshop
Venue: USQ Toowoomba Campus, T Block, room T124
Audience: Years 7-12
Time: 3.30pm - 5.30pm
Topic: Dr Jessie Christiansen (NASA Exoplanet Science Institute - Caltech) will be visiting USQ Toowoomba Campus to to present You Can’t Spell Exoplanets without Ex(exutions)!
Build-A-Planet Workshop
Venue: USQ Toowoomba Campus, Q Block, room Q172
Audience: Prep - Year 2
Time: 3.30pm - 5.30pm
Topic: Mr Jake Clark (USQ PhD student) will introduce children to the wonders of space and our universe through the Build-A-Planet workshop. Learn about the surfaces, interiors, climates and conditions on different planets, and have lots of fun while you do it!
Toowoomba Astronomy Main Event followed by stargazing
Venue: USQ Toowoomba Campus, Alison Dickson Lecture Theatre, room H102
Audience: Community - all
Time: 6.00pm - 8.00pm followed by Stargazing from 8.30pm - late

Brisbane Planetarium Astronomy Seminar
Venue: Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium, Toowong
Audience: Community - all
