Islands on the Coast looks at the transitional nature of painting and printmaking in the 21st century and presents the individual practices of painting and printmaking students from the Visual Arts Department, University of Southern Queensland. The exhibition shows the dynamic and varied ways of working that is occurring within USQ’s painting and printmaking studios through traditional and non- traditional responses to representation, abstraction and mixed media. This group of work collectively reflects national and international movements in the field as students look for fresh and innovative ways of both engaging with traditional techniques but pushing these into new visual contemporary responses. Overall Islands on the Coast presents a variety of individual artistic directions that are about how emerging artists creatively think about the world and how this is visually represented within the conceptual, material and visual decisions they independently make in the creation of their work.
