Local artist Donna Mitchell believes community is vital to the success of our world and an essential part of human existence that significantly impacts on worldview. Painting people is her way of ‘mapping’ regional communities and undertaking a reflective gaze on human relationships, and resilience of the human spirit.
Mitchell’s new works present confrontation of identity and celebrate the unique individual – from everyday folk to Toowoomba icons. The work explores engagement with colour, line, reduction of form, and a more sensually painted surface, retaining a foundation of realism balanced with a contemporary essence.
Mitchell is interested in seeking the heart of community, raising awareness, promoting connectedness and painting narratives and emotions that release expressions of humanity. The intent is to bypass judgement and resolution, yet maintain a curious balance between hope and pain, truth and reality.
