Transparent: Watercolour in Queensland 1850s – 1980s showcases more than 50 exquisite watercolours from the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Collection. Drawn from the State Collection, the artworks on display celebrated the important role of watercolour in Queensland’s art history.
The regional tour has been drawn from the popular exhibition curated by Michael Hawker, Associate Curator, Australian Art, QAGOMA presented at the QAG from 22 March to 20 July 2014 and explores over a century of art in Queensland.
‘For more than a century and a half, watercolour painting has been an energetic aspect of artistic life in this state. The exhibition shows the considerable talent and achievements of Queensland’s watercolour artists, many others who occupy a significant place in the history of Australian art,’ said Mr Saines.
Works by Toowoomba-born watercolourist J.J. Hilder are amongst the paintings to visit the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery. Hilder’s watercolours beautifully distil their subjects to an atmospheric, dreamlike vision, as can be seen in Island schooner, Moreton Bay 1910.
Transparent: Watercolours in Queensland 1850s–1980s reveals the considerable talent and achievements of Queensland’s great watercolour artists including Conrad Martens, Harriet Jane Neville-Rolfe, J.J. Hilder, Kenneth Macqueen, WG Grant and many others who occupy a significant place in the history of Australian art.
The exhibition will be on display at Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery from 16 April until 29 May 2016.
A Curator's talk with Michael Hawker, Associate Curator, Australian Art, QAGOMA will be held on Sunday 15 May at 1.30pm. The curator's talk is a free event and all are welcome.
