What a great start we are going to have for 2020! Black Velvet Quartet delivers jazz. Strong and hot. Like a well-oiled wheel, they keep the music at fever-pitch, tossing out tunes to excite the soul and caress the spirit. Warwick based vocalist Deeny Kohler-Caporale delivers a power-packed performance that never fails to delight audiences. Born in South Africa, she was immersed in the jazz culture of Cape Town. Her style is distinctive. Her mix is refreshing. Jazz oozes out of every pore in her gutsy, heartwarming performance. " I was born with an infusion of jazz through my veins" is how she laughingly describes herself.
Deeny migrated to Australia in '79, performed in wine bars and restaurants in Sydney before moving to Hervey Bay where she was the lead vocalist with the Ken Hodgkinson Big Band, an 18 piece orchestra sponsored by 4MB. She won the Female Jazz Vocalist title for the Wide Bay Burnett Region.
Upon moving to the Gold Coast, Deeny performed with New-Zealand Band Dr. Jazz at the Gold Coast Jazz Festival. She had a residency at the Hyatt Regency Sanctuary Cove performing soulful Latin jazz backed by Conservatorium trained James Sheeram. Other residencies included La Scala at Marina Mirage and Oscars at Broadbeach.
Longing for a "tree-change", Deeny moved to Warwick where she performed at Mayoral Concerts, Balls and Jazz functions. She has since opened her own restaurant, Joie de Vivre, a quaint bohemian venue in King Street Warwick and hosts events for Jumpers and Jazz in July and regular Jazz nights to packed audiences.
It was during these years that Black Velvet Jazz was formed. Deeny teamed up with the superlative talent of pianist Graham Muller; Bassist Camillo Lanzafamo and Drummer Neville Jess. Since then they have had tremendous rapport with audiences with their diverse range of music. Black Velvet Jazz regularly performs at the Toowoomba Carnival of flowers, Toowoomba Summer Tunes, Warwick Jumpers and Jazz Festival and numerous restaurants, wineries, private and corporate functions, the latest being Customs House in Brisbane.
Admission is $20 for visitors and $15 for members. Refreshments are provided and there is a raffle and a lucky door prize.
The bowls club offer a smorgasbord every Friday jazz nights – only $16.50 for a great selection of mains, desserts and fruit. Available from 6:00 to 7:15pm. Please ring to book 07 4639 2338.
