Create your own seasonal card with beautiful Celtic Calligraphy and Illumination with local calligrapher Susan Bradshaw. for adults.

If you have admired the beautiful and fascinating Celtic writing and art forms, then this weekend workshop will help you to achieve your dream of creating a beautifully embellished piece, great for Christmas cards. Modern Celtic decoration using knots and dots will add the final touch to your creativity. Its crisp letterforms are both graceful and flamboyant. One day will be spent learning the basics of this style and on the second day, you will be able to use a variety of medium to embellish your own ornate ‘Letter’ in Illumination.

Day one

Susan will introduce the class to the Insular Half-Uncial hand by studying examples - The Lindisfarne Gospels by Stan Knight, the Book of Kells by Christopher De Hamel and Anatomy of Letters by Charles Pearce.

Next, students will use Brause nibs to write the classic form of half-uncial before looking at a modern style. Exemplars and line sheets will be supplied plus quotes and words to plan for your final piece on day two. Students are also welcome to bring their own special quotes of no more than twenty letters.

Day two

Explore the knots, dots and zoomorphic decorations that are very much admired today by studying the classic illuminated letters of the Uncial hand. Create your own small, finished artwork featuring a quote or greeting with you own ornate features.
