An angry and honest view of the world in 1956.
A groundbreaking feat in realism, Osborne’s play from the 50s spawned the term ‘angry young man’ and revolutionised theatre with a heady tale of love triangles, betrayal and an unflinchingly realistic look at the world.
When the play was first performed it was reported that Osborne did not just contribute to the British theatre, instead, he set off a land mine and blew it up. The play explores the struggles of the post-war British class system through the lens of a young married couple and their boarder. It made audiences gasp on their first viewing. They had never seen a play that featured such ordinary items onstage as an ironing board and a kitchen sink. The playwright’s fearless use of realism lead to the creation of the term ‘What an angry young man’. Osborne was angry enough and honest enough to tell a story the way he saw the world. Warts and all.
