‘the past continues to haunt the present’ – Aileen Moreton-Robinson, a Goenpul woman of the Quandamooka people
Australia possesses a colonial past and is possessed by it. Frontier wars still discharge into the present, not least in their visual legacy and remembrance. To explore the unsettling presence of the past, this exhibition regards First Nations countries occupied by, but unceded to, the State of Queensland. It presents contemporary works by First Nations artists alongside colonialist images of dispossession. Its themes are invasion, resistance and the prospects of reconciliation and reparation.
Displays are selected the Gallery’s permanent collections. Featured artists include Tony Albert, Gordon Bennett, Meg Hansen, Livingston Hopkins, Norman Lindsay, Frank Mahony, Vincent Serico and Judy Watson. Through their art, a haunted state comes into view.
Exhibition on display 27 May – 20 August
