The Toowoomba Choral Society proudly presents: Sweeney Todd, the unsettling tale of a Victorian-era barber who returns home to London after fifteen years of exile. Taking revenge on the corrupt Judge Turpin, who ruined his life and lusted after his wife Lucy who poisoned herself. Turpin also had Todd’s daughter Johanna locked away intending to force her to marry him. When revenge eludes him, Sweeney swears vengeance on the entire human race, murdering as many people as he can, while his business associate Mrs. Lovett bakes the bodies into meat pies and sells them to the unsuspecting public. In the midst of this darkness, the beautiful Johanna is pursued and rescued by the young sailor Anthony Hope. But as Sweeney descends deeper into insanity, the cover up story begins to unravel when suspicions arise and hidden truths are uncovered.

Featuring songs such as The Worst Pies in LondonJohanna, By the Sea, Not While I’m Around, Green Finch and Linnet Birdand The Ballad of Sweeney ToddSweeney Todd is perhaps composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim’s most perfect score.
