Chamber sax like you have never heard!

Hosted by the USQ Academic Division.

Continuum Sax, Australia’s foremost Saxophone quartet, performs a unique repertoire that explores the intriguing, exciting and expressive world of the saxophone. This concert will premiere new transcriptions, breathing new life into sublime melodies from the Spanish diaspora.

Each player is a leading figure within the saxophone community. Hear Nic Russionello, Australian Young Performer of the Year in 2013, Christina Leonard, in demand as a soloist with Brandenburg Orchestra and the Song Company, James Nightingale, saxophonist for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and Martin Kay, who is developing a reputation as a unique compositional and improvisational voice. Having played together for fifteen years they have developed a musical empathy and tonal blend which holds audiences in thrall.

Continuum Sax presents concerts in their native Sydney and have performed on many ABC live broadcasts. In 2013 they performed at the Australasian Saxophone and Clarinet Conference and In 2012 traveled abroad to take up an invite to perform at the World Saxophone Congress in Scotland. They have released three recordings. ‘Continuum’, ‘Icon’ and ‘Length and Breath.’

In Review:
‘György Ligeti’s Six Bagatelles [were] played with that combination of unanimity and individuality by the players of Continuum Sax that is the hallmark of good chamber music.’ – Sydney Morning Herald, 27 August 2010.

‘This is a group that plays as one—a really beautiful, integrated sonority…’ From Review of Continuum CD, 24 Hours Magazine (Oct. 2002).

‘Deft at melding sounds, with a score or without …’Continuum Sax do improvisation very well … the ensemble is equally impressive when playing scored works … making Perry Goldstein’s Motherless Child Variations, with its telling references to Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, so memorable.’ –’Sydney Morning Herald, 24 October 2006.

A reception in the USQ Arts Gallery will follow the recital – refreshments will be served.
