Classic film Metropolis will be scored live by blues rock outfit HoneyBird to produce a live rock opera like no other!

If you loved The Who’s ‘Tommy’ and Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’…

A multi-faceted live production of music and film… re-imagining the artistic vision and striking meaning of Metropolis, the prescient 1927 film about a foreboding future by Fritz Lang. In the theatrical style of a rock-opera, the story takes place in a highly stylised futuristic city where a beautiful, exotic utopia exists above a depressing underworld populated by faceless, mistreated workers. Audiences today can identify with the film’s deeper moral desires and the underlying political themes, which today still resonate.

This work will incorporate this magnificent film underpinned by a live music performance by HoneyBird, with special guests Ami Carney on drums and percussion and John May on keys – including distinguished local violinist Matisse Williment and her string ensemble Sedici Corde String Quartet – interfaced with a multi-faceted theatrical design by Ian Golding.

The score, written and performed by HoneyBird will convey the production’s intended message; drawing parallels from then to now, awakening contemporary society to issues of poverty and conflict, power and greed, and political themes as they may play out today.

HoneyBird’s original tracks from their 2013 album ‘A Golden Thread’ fit the thematic context beautifully, enhancing the films powerful visuals and positioning audiences to reflect, not just be entertained. Also incorporated in the piece will be some unlikely musical covers, reinterpreted, to give the audience a point of recognition and allow great songs to fill grand narrative spaces. HoneyBird are also developing thematic instrumentals and motifs as part of the work’s score, which will link and weave throughout the film for this ageless story to be magnificently re-imagined.

HoneyBird is Sunshine Coast based, and is Ilsa Wynne-Hoelscher vocals / Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher guitar / Andy Kidd guitar / Paul Kusy bass. Their original music is described as soulful, blues rock, reflecting influences ranging from Amy Winehouse and Nick Cave, through to Pink Floyd & Led Zeppelin.
