What is SHAVING FACE About?!

Saving Face: to avoid having other people lose respect for oneself.

Do you want to join me in making a difference? Myself and some mates are shaving our facial hair to raise money in aid of Beyond Blue and awareness for men's mental health, every donation will help. In addition we will be creating a video interviewing people on their thoughts on facial hair and experience with men's mental health. More information about Beyond Blue Limited: Beyond Blue's mission is to equip everyone in Australia with the knowledge and skills to achieve their best possible mental health, whatever their age and wherever they live. They give people the confidence to support those around them, and make anxiety, depression and suicide part of everyday conversations. And as well as tackling stigma, prejudice and discrimination, they're breaking down the barriers that prevent people from speaking up and reaching out.

A message from the campaign organiser (Chris):

If someone had told me that I was highly anxious and even more so depressed 3.5 years ago, I wouldn’t have believed you and anyone who knew me would have thought the same thing. I was 24, in a relationship, had a decent engineering job at a large private company and spent a lot of time at the gym, on personal development, with friends and playing sport. On paper, life looked GREAT!

I LOVE personal development, and I decided to see a professional psychologist, in an attempt to get more out of life. She gave me a 400 long questionnaire to fill out, which deciphered what was actually going on... It hit me like a tonne of bricks and completely blindsided me, AND if I really, really tried hard enough to look it made a lot of sense to how I had been feeling even though that feeling to me felt… NORMAL.

I was fortunate enough after that experience to go travelling for 5 months around the world. I met up with a group of travelling entrepreneurs and ALL the young men had facial hair and I didn’t (a choice…cough cough…realistically I couldn’t grow a full beard even if I tried!). I decided to question this, surprisingly all the responses were similar; people take me more serious at work, people RESPECT me more, it makes me look older and girls like it. I challenged them all to let go of these attachments and stories and shave their facial hair, and guess what? THEY DID! The beaming expressions on all of their clean shaven faces was evidence enough to see how a little bit of change, courage and letting go of a stigma can empower and light someone up.

Funnily enough I grew my first full beard in the months after that and have been growing it for the past 2 and a bit years. My grandmother has been hounding me since I got it that I look like a Greek Orthodox Priest and would tease me by calling me Pater (Father/Priest in Greek) and offered to pay me $100 to shave it. It got me thinking and SHAVING FACE was born.

Currently we are almost 1/5 of the way to our goal of raising $5,000 and I’m going to need YOUR support to get all the way there.
